HOME COMFORTS!
For the first time in ages, BZ filmed a video in Dublin
- well, about an hour outside of Dublin, to be exact. You Needed Me was
shot in a studio in a beautiful location in Co.Wicklow - which turned
out to be very handy for Stephen Gately, who lives nearby!
WELCOME BACK!
The people responsible for the making of the video are
Boyzone's brand new video making friends - the same team who created the
fantastic Comic Relief video. Call them crazy, but they were
brave enough to come back for more!
MOAN, MOAN, MOAN...
Everybody knows by now (mainly because the boys never
stop going on about it), that BZ hate making videos. But they didn't
have too much to complain about at this one, since there was only one
set (no waiting around for endless complicated set changes), and they
also only had one outfit to change into. But, as you can imagine, they
still managed to whinge a little bit...
COLLAR AND TIES
When you catch the video, you'll no doubt agree (we hope!),
that the boys were looking very nice in their smart dark suits and ties.
But even so, cheeky Keith Duffy still managed to find a joke -
reckoning he looked like he was all dressed up and ready to make a court
appearance in his suit! Tsk.
MIND YER HEAD!
The YNM set was simple but striking. Some poor video
making person had obviously been at the studio from a very early hour,
haning beautiful and ornate (but picture less) picture framees of all
different sizes in long rows from the studio rafters. And not one of
them fell down once!
PRACTICE
MAKES PERFECT...
After a quick run through of the song in his head, to
make sure he could still remember all the words, Ro was the first to
start filming. All he had to do was stroll up and down the rows of
frames - and the shot was so informal and laid back he looked like he
was still rehearsing his words!
HANDS OFF!
It took forever to drag Mikey onto the set to shoot the
firsat band shot of the day. He was found in a dark corner of the
studio, getting to grips with his brand new hands free mobile phone
answering apparatus. He refused to un-clip it from his suit lapel all
day!
WHAT A LOVE...
A special mention should go to lovely Stephen Gately,
when he heard that a very long time (and hugely loyal) BZ fan called
Lisa was waiting bravely outside the studios to say hello to him. He
asked a crew member to go out and fetch her inside to watch, then spent
the day bringing hercakes so she didn't go hungry! Bless...
BREATHE!
Another special memtion goes to Ronan, who, with baby
Jack due to make his appearance at any moment, was a bit of a hysterical
heap. Equipped with not only his mobile phone, but a special baby pager
too, he ended up in biuts every time anybody's phone rang!
OH, BOYS...
Each band member was required to film a couple of solo
video segments each, which always created plenty of comedy moments
amongst the remaining four boys. In all the years the band have been
filmed videos, they've never managed to grow out of schoolboy silliness
of constantly trying to put one another off - and finding the whole
process of doing so highly amusing. Thank heaven for that - because it's
actually very entertaining to watch!
IT'S A WIND UP!
Also quite entertaining to watch were the boys' playback
commitee meetings, when the video director invited the band to gather
round the monitor, to take a look at the progress of filming after each
shot. They spent most of this time winding each other up about the way
they looked!
GOOOOTRGEOUS!
And as usual, poor Stephen ended up with the roughest
deal. As he left the set after his first solo bit, only slightly
traumatised, Ro was still not done... "Stephen that was fab -
you were goooorgeous!" he gushed, in his most OTT showbiz
voice. And Stephen's response? Well, we're sorry, but we can't tell you
about that here, we're afraid...
PLASTIC
MAN...
Study the YNM video hard (go on, force yourself),
and try and work out what it is that Shane has poking out of the corner
of his mouth... Oh OK then, we'll tell you. Mr. Lynch spent the entire
day chewing on the same plastic teaspoon - and wouldn't even take it out
for artistic filming purposes! He's lucky he didn't breathe in too fast
and end up with any plastic spoon madical emergencies... Don't try it at
home!
